‘Ping Pong Playa’ bounces back and forth between dumb and, mostly, smart

Asian-American cinema breaks out of its identity crisis with a comedy that is competitive with the American standard while addressing social and cultural issues particular to minority audiences. Although “Ping Pong Playa” stays within a certain formula, it would be unfair to dismiss it as “Stupid American Comedy, Chinese Style.” Jessica Yu, director of such innovative and experimental documentaries as “Protagonist” and “In the Realms of the Unreal,” is too smart for that.
