Whats up everyone.  Its been awhile, i hope everyone is well.

So my daughter is almost 4 now and like every other 4 yr old, is obsessed with everything princess.  We found a asian perincess doll that looked like her, but she said she wanted the white one.  With the lack of any ethnic princess movies or dolls i wasn’t surprised. so i am boycottinh barbie shit and want to find some asian princess cartoons or kid appropriate movies.  Google search spits back mostly porn… so any parents have any suggestions?

hahaha Google search…

You should talk to Curry and we do need that new II Stix forum topic category, Strollers & Pre-schools.

Of course there is Mulan… I love that movie. :D The thing is, I think there is a correlation between princess and white.  Back when Mulan came out, I remember so many Caucasian American moms were raving about it because it was like the first cartoon/story/myth for girls that didn’t involve a sleeping princess waiting to be saved by a prince.  I think it’s true… I’m glad I had Chinese stories about female warriors, war and duty, etc. to listen to as a kid to balance out the princess stories.

Non-Asian but ethnic: Pocahontas?

yeah, i think shes still a liitle too young right now to watch the warrior princess ones...so I’m trying to find asian princesses.  Her exposure to barbie, snow white & other white princesses is too much.  Theres only so much ni hao ki lan she can watch lol

Thanks for the link carly

yeah, true about the age.  she’s probably too young for mulan.  when my little sister was 4, i think we watched the little mermaid a million times.  do half-fish count as a non-race?

what kind of stories do asian people tell toddlers?  i can’t remember or think of any.

Another reason to boycott the princess stories… I just read this book about psycho people with borderline personality disorder where the author uses all of these familiar fairy tales (Snow White, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, and others) as analogies to illustrate these crazy witch queen mothers abusing their waif daughters.  Tiger Mom is nothing compared to Borderline Witch.

Okay - I know its a stretch, but if you’re okay with Disney, Silvermist is the water fairy from Pixie Holllow (Tinkerbell adventures) voiced by Lucy Liu. She’s not a lead character and is asian in only a token sort of the way. There is nothing that suggests Asian culture. Probably not helpful, but that what came to me.

Mulan 2 is less about fighting, doesn’t have cross dressing, has a wedding, and less Eddie Murphy, you might try that.  It’s still not princessy though.

Finding asian dolls are impossible.  Disney only started carrying the mulan doll again this past year.  I bought an Edward Cullen barbie and put his clothes on the Disney Shang doll so that my daughter would play with an Asian boy doll. I also tried dying a blond child barbie doll’s hair black with hair dye… That didn’t work out well.  Oh, and one of the Barbies in the black label line is Asian.

I should ask some friends overseas if there were any Asian cartoons for little girls I can find.  Japan can’t be just making cartoons about ninjas.
