To force myself to get more exercise, I started not using elevators or escalators. Everyday, I climb up/down 7 flights of stairs at Bart station after parking my car in the morning (I always park at the top). I run up/down the stairs to get in/out of Bart station after getting off the train. I run up/down 6 floors of stairs at work instead of using elevator. Might not be much but it’s better than nothing.
I would run or walk briskly up 5 floors when I was working. It was surprising to me how many coworkers would be huffing and puffing halfway up and heaving by the top.
At my company, apparently the CEO specified that stairwells were to be extra large. Very few people take the elevators. It’s easy when you have a culture where everyone takes the stairs and you look lazy on the elevator.
Oddly I’m taking the stairs a lot less since I got here, I work on the ground floor and live one floor up. It did take me 25 min to walk back/forth from work, but I have a bike now. Still, I do a lot more walking here.
