After reading Atonement I decided to watch the movie, since I heard it was such a faithful rendition of the book.

Well, afterwards, I watched Best of the Best to man myself up and played Call of Duty 4 for a while to get the hurt out of my chest from watching easily one of the most romanitic, heart wrenching, masochistic movies ever.

less girly.  it’s like forget about the handcuffs and the whips and bring on the rack and the iron maiden.

although I have to say I liked Atonement.  it’s very rare you find that kinda ending on a girly movie.  it’s like HA that’s what you get for trying to drag me to a chick flick.

i’ve lucked out this past weekend as far as movies are concerned

gone baby gone - pretty solid acting all around and pleasantly surprised with both Afflecks.  not your typical crime/thriller movie in that it’s quite introspective at times.  I thought it was a bit long though - just when i thought it was going to end, something else would happen.

city of god - good movie overall.  some of the violence is pretty shocking in that it’s carried out by really young kids but i felt kind of detached from it, maybe the fact that it was almost too stylized at times.

once - loved it.  worth watching just to hear Glen and Marketa sing but fairly engaging as well.  the characters act and are real musicsians rather then caricatures of musicians.

The Bank Job - ok.  Need to view again in its entirety, but otherwise, it does a good job of re-creating some of that 70’s feeling

The Descent - Watching attractive women is one thing, but watching attractive women get mangled is just a bit too much.  It’s a horror movie that starts out with the promise of a movie like Alien and then devolves into a Hostel.

Friday Night Lights - I never get tired of sports dramas.  This is an old one to catch if you haven’t already seen it.

The double life of Veronique (french/polish film)- strange and hard to follow if you don’t go in understanding the premise of it.  then again, that’s part of the fun.  Irene Jacob is gorgeous in it.
up the Yangtze - excellent documentary on the three gorges dam project.  provides an interesting perspective on how china is treating its citizens in the impacted areas but still fairly objective.  beautifully shot and highly recommended.

Has anyone see this movie, “Spirit of Jeet Kune Do: Once Upon a time in a High School”? I wanna see it. Any good?

I liked it.

Don’t expect a martial arts epic though.  Its more of a story about a rough year of high school.  And a Korean high school at that, so expect alot of corporal punishment.

The storytelling is brisk an the performances are really charismatic.

And of course, there are messed up relationship dynamics.

I saw it as a protest movie against an authoriatarian, or even totalitarian, Korean educational system.  And as another reason to be glad I didn’t go to high school in Korea.

It started out good, and then petered out at the end from what I can remember last year.  If you have disposable time, it’s worth a viewing but don’t expect too much.

Speaking of which, fanimecon’s free Asian film weekend is coming up during Memorial Day weekend.

rumors are Devastator will be in TF2.
an artists rendition of devastator, not Michael bay’s vision. i hope he simplifies the robot designs for the sequel.
