Good point.  The article does state that SF demographics have remained about the same.  I’d assume the same for affluent areas.

I wonder if this might create a drive towards denser and cheaper (per person) housing?

Some owned houses before it got so expensive.  A couple who has cleaned house for my parents for almost 20 years owns 2 houses in San Mateo.  Their rental makes a profit.  Their rate is ~$30/hr as a couple and one of them has a second job.  All in all they probably make about 80-90k.  San Mateo comes right after Palo Alto in expensiveness, but many Latinos live on the east side of San Mateo.  I hired another couple to clean my condo a while back.  They charged me over $40/hr (partly because it was only once/month.) They weren’t as smart though.  When I called them, I could hear a lot of people in the background.  Multiple families were probably living in one home.

Back around 2000, I lived in an apartment in Mountain View in a neighborhood where many gardeners lived.  I don’t know if they owned or rented but the rent was probably manageable for a dual earner couple in jobs making $15-20/hr.

P.S. And part of the reason why their rental makes a profit is they also rent out the garage.

I think some guys get paid a lot and some guys barely scrape by.  I paid a a guy approximately $40 an hour to clean up my front yard.  He hired two other younger guys and I’m pretty sure they weren’t paid all that much.  I’d guess that the guy in charge probably made at least $80 an hour and paid the other guys $20 an hour, and I think that would be pretty generous.  And I’m pretty sure he doesn’t report the income in his taxes since he wanted cash and asked that the check be made out to his wife.

this has some interesting detailed data:

http://www.stanford.edu/dept/csre/reports/report_13.pdf

looking at the county level data for household and family income, the difference between races doesn’t seem that big but then looking at per capita data, i’m even surprised how much more white people make compare to asians in the bay area.  and there are rich black people in inyo and random counties.

Apparently, the WHO says that the Amnesty Intl report on North Korean healthcare is a load of crock.  I kinda trust the WHO a bit more, since they actually have people in country.

I wonder if South Korea is pulling out it’s health care funding now.

Photos released in VA visitor’s murder

This visitor from VA gets killed over $17.  Yes, more senseless violence.  But what made me post this link was what my friend posted:

“I’m all for racial profiling.. how can you not? The father of three’s life was worth $17.. really?”

So what do you think?

^it must suck to be black because you’re probably racially profiled and stereotyped negatively all the time.  i wonder if i was black if i’d go the carlton route and always try to avoid the gangster image.

so apparently the right may try eliminate citizenship for those born in the us to non citizens.  i can see where they base their argument but i’m not sure how much i agree with it.  i wonder how many people this would actually affect anyway?

^ the article talks about illegal immigrants and “dropping a child” but it doesn’t only affect them.  it would affect people on visas and permanent residents.  many of us 2nd generation asians wouldn’t be citizens, at least when born.  or it would give more incentive for 1st generation immigrant parents to become citizens instead of keep permanent resident status.

I spent a summer looking over cases where people are being removed/deported and I have to say that the 14 Amendment and immigration law are not very compatiable.  A driving factor in US immigration law is family unification, but the 14th Amendment works counter to that policy because parents and children now have different nationalities

The 14th amendment also provides a pretty significant and permanent loophole for many undocumented aliens. Undocumented parents can apply for cancellation of removal if they are ever deported based on hardship to the US citizen kids.  Once the kids are in grade-school the judge usually lets the parents stay unless the parents have criminal records.  Eventually, once one of the kids turn 21, the parent can immediately apply for a greencard.

I think it makes more sense to give the children born in the United States the same legal immigration status as their parents (perhaps their mother since that’s easiest to prove).

That probably makes sense but I like being a citizen. smile My parents kept permanent resident status until HK went back to China or maybe even after, I don’t know.  Then I’d have had to apply to be a citizen after being an adult already.  Also then is it possible for kids born here to end up with no citizenship to any country?  They’d have to make sure to apply for the babies to be citizens of their old country where the kid has never been.

no… wouldn’t affect me here, and not planning on moving to US anytime soon, but I would like that option in case things change for me in the future.
