It all depends on how the people of Detroit react.
I think the majority of the people supporting Obama do beleive in the ability to effect change. However, there is a difference between wanting change and making change.
I understand where you are getting at, and the electorate is dumb. Too many people vote based on class, race, gender, etc. as the only measure of a candidate. That’s why Detroit has a sucky mayor, and here in Chicago, we have an idiot for Cook County Board Chair because he was the son of the former Chair. That is a problem here in Chicago with fathers and sons.
Unless people actually want to make change for themselves, no change is going ot happen, regardless of who is in office. Obama can become President, and make as many Federal opportunities available to the people of Detroit, but unless they are willing to work for it, nothing is going to happen.
The issue here with “change” politics is, is the opportunity being offered real? With the Bush administration, it certainly hasn’t and its made it harder for cities such as Detroit. With Barack Obama, I beleive the opportunities will come, it all depends on the people.
But part of me thinks people really want to hear, “Black people in Detroit are voting for Obama just because his is black, because they are under the impression that a black President will give them more handouts and welfare.” Which is not entirely true. I think black people are voting for Obama just because he is black, same reason why white women are voting for Hillary because she is also a white woman. Same reason why some independents won’t vote for either Barack or Hillary because they don’t want a woman or a black man in office. Its stupid, but people aren’t required to be informed voters.
