Ok, I read a little more about the law.  The law says affiliates are a “physical presence” in the state which require collecting sales tax.  So now I see why Amazon and a whole bunch of other big retailers dropped their California affiliates.

This is lame.  Affiliates are like directories.  If a physical store pays Yellow Pages to put an ad in the directory, I don’t think that is considered a physical presence.

Also if a customer clicks on a CA affiliate link and sees sales tax added to the order, he will just go find a non-CA link with no sales tax!  Duh, CA government!  So CA not only wouldn’t get sales tax anyway but now also loses income tax and jobs for its residents.

I don’t think it makes sense to have Internet sales tax on a state by state basis of different affiliate links.  I wouldn’t mind everyone having to pay WA state sales tax for Amazon purchases.  I mean, either base it on the company location or the buyer residence.

sad today finding out my old friend from elementary school has ovarian cancer.  even though i haven’t been in touch with her for 24 years, it is still a little surprisingly hitting me.

4 earthquakes, Steve Jobs stepping down, and my cousin fractured his neck.  What is the world coming to.

My best friend in college posted this on FB.  Went to Stanford and is a PhD student in education.  A social scientist crunching numbers for social research.  She posted that white crime outnumbered black crime 2 to 1 which is supposed to disprove that black crime is a bigger issue than white crime...!!!  The article says that about 84% of crimes against whites are committed by whites, and about 94% of crimes against blacks are committed by blacks, so they’re the same!!!  And the data uses a definition of white that includes Hispanic at 80% of the population.  Ahh… you’d never catch an Asian person writing an article like this… not even Asians who are bad at math.
