I am thinking of selling a bunch of stuff and getting a MK3.

I’d still use the 5D but pretty much for only studio shoots. Mk3 for everything else.

why would you use the 5D over the MkIII for studio shoots?

5D = 12.1 Mega pixels and full frame, more fragile. better for portraits and deeper bokeh.

1D Mk3 = 10.1 Mega pixels with 1.3x sensor crop, full weather seal more rugged for traveling and field work. better for lower lighting with the 3200iso expandable to 6400. + highlight priority setting.

Ah, I thought you meant 1Ds Mk3.  Dude, just get one of those and you’re set.

Rumours are the 5D Mk2 will be weather sealed, and ISO up the wazoo, like 12800+.

1DsMK3 only does 5 frames per second or something slow. ISO only at 3200 extended and flash sync is at 1/250, where as the 1DMK3 is at 1/300, something a bit more useful for the jumping action shots with flash strobe.

5Dmk2 is only gained about 3-4MP over mine, better auto focus and a few small things that really wont matter in the studio with controlled lighting and all. Not worth the upgrade for me. Though I would rather get a couple more lenses from the collection I already have.

-50mm 1.2
-24-105mm f/4L
-180mm f/3.5 Macro
-400mm f/2.8

Is that the 1.2L?  Or some older FD mount with an adapter?

yeah, the L. the new 1.2’s are really sweet.

85 is nice, but it is kinda one trick pony. too much zoom for much else. 70-200 2.8 would be the preferred lens if i was already going that far into the focal length.

I picked up a 1.0X swab sensor cleaning kit today. I should get the 1.6X kit for my 20D, that one is also in need of a sensor cleaning.

Another thing I picked up was the 24-105mm f/4L IS lens. It’ll probably never make it to connect with the 20D. Strictly for studio strobe / controlled light photography.

I ended up getting a Panasonic FZ8:

I found one on Amazon brand new for about $220.  I’ll be positing up some impressions once I get to play with it more; I just got it today and I’m charging the batt.

No, I don’t have one outside of my camera phone. that really sucks though.

I usually just rock a 50mm lens and take off the extended battery pack and it is usually pretty easy to manage in size. It’s not as big as what It would be if i brought all my gear with me.

If i were to get one, it’d be the Canon A470. Just came out, pretty small. I’d get the orange one.

I like the SD40 line too, they are tiny as hell.

My g/f has the pink sd40.  Takes great pix for a tiny camera, and battery life is pretty good.  My Casio Exilim has excellent battery life.  At the end of a 7 day Hawaii trip, and being used regularly for both photo and movie mode, there was still between 1/2 to 2/3 battery life left.

Joe, I have a question for you.  You talked about a sensor cleaning kit.  My g/f also has a Canon 10d dslr.  One of her telephoto lenses has been producing less than quality pictures lately, and before, this was one of her best lenses.  Would you recommend cleaning the sensor?  If so, what kind of cleaning kit?  Otherwise, should we take it to a camera shop? If so, what shop in the area would you recommend?  Thanks man.

If it is only that lens that is producing bad pictures, then you should check to see if the lens from the inner glass element is dirty. But for cleaning kits, I kinda found this out on my own, just take it to a dealer and pay to have it properly cleaned. I got a lot of shit off of my sensor with the 5D, but I think the stuff I used left some kind of residue on the IR filter on top of the sensor that is giving me slightly softer images. I need to clean it again with a solution based swab and then use the blower thing to get it dry.

Otherwise, first, check to see if all you need is a blower thing (manual, not the aerosol cans of air) to just get the dust off of it. Try that before getting expensive cleaning kits.

Have you gotten the camera yet?  I’ve been thinking of getting a superzoom camera for the times that we don’t wanna lug around the 10d.
