I’m doing pretty well. Funny, I only meant to move back to Edmonton for a bit but it’s turned out to be a lot lot longer. Still trying to get a handle on what happens next.
How are things with you? Are you looking to stay in Winnipeg?
oops forgot to reply. I’m going to be in winnipeg for the next year - I’ve signed up for a private fee for service clinic in the city, should be pretty good I start in July.

actually i thought your former employer pays for unemployment?
according to wikipedia, you’re both kind of right and wrong:
Unemployment Insurance (UI) is a federal-state program jointly financed through federal and state employer payroll taxes (federal/state UI tax)[6]. Generally, employers must pay both state and federal unemployment taxes if:
(1) they pay wages to employees totaling $1500, or more, in any quarter of a calendar year; or[6],
(2) they had at least one employee during any day of a week during 20 weeks in a calendar year, regardless of whether or not the weeks were consecutive. However, some state laws differ from the federal law[6], .
To facilitate this program, the US Congress passed the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA), which authorizes the Internal Revenue Service to collect an annual federal employer tax used to fund state workforce agencies. FUTA covers the costs of administering the Unemployment Insurance and Job Service programs in all states. In addition, FUTA pays one-half of the cost of extended unemployment benefits (during periods of high unemployment) and provides for a fund from which states may borrow, if necessary, to pay benefits. As originally established, the States paid the Federal Government[6].
so your company pays a payroll tax and the government disburses it when the need arises.
If you had to choose between money and passion, which would you choose? Let me rephrase that question. There are 3 job opportunities. Job one is something you are not passionate about but it’s an executive position at large company that has potential to become much more important and higher paying job down the line. It’s also close to home. Job two is managerial position with a small startup company doing what you really love doing. You have chance to build and grow the company but it’s 50/50 whether company will become really successful or might not be around in few years. But this job does have lots of room to grow and it seems really fun. Job three is with a super large tech internet company doing type of work that will look good on your resume and is in high demand. This position is bit of a commute and is not a managerial position.
If starting pay is same for all three of these jobs, which would you choose?
I don’t think money is the biggest issue unless you wouldn’t be able to afford basic things or if it would mean the difference between sending your kids to college and not. It sounds like all three jobs have potential of higher pay in the future.
