I’ve had a stable job for the last 7 yrs.  I’m itching for something different though, will probably go the freelance route.

It’s probably the grass is greener syndrome, but I had better do it now before I get any older.

i had to travel for work. was commuting
almost weekly for two years. to singapoo
and tokyo. past 6 months bi-continental to
sydney.

sucks. i like sleeping in my bed. and having
all my crap in my closet whenever i please.

i think the freelance route now would be for
starting something on my own.

and not so much wake up at 4pm topsy turvy
night and day freelance paycheck life. i did
that before. after my first job. fun then, but
not now.

i need something very stable and secure, so freelancing, unless done on the side with a stable job, is not for me.

my ultimate goal would be to work towards a well structured freelance job, where i have a broad, loyal clientele and enough projects to keep me busy while also allowing me the freedom to take a couple weeks and check out europe if i wanted to.

i’m sure i’ll have to start out at a 9 to 5 at some large firm to make connections and gain experience, but i don’t mind that at all. its just more of a means to an end for me, though.

i’m gonna do travel nursing soon. it’s kinda like freelance cause i get to travel 3 months at a time. but i get paid and get benefits of a full time employee… plus agency provides housing and utilities so it’s kind of awesome in that sense...i’ll be able to save more.

sweet, where are you thinking of going?

i’m thinking of heading west… maybe chicago/milwaukee (YES MILWAUKEE! cause i heard it’s kinda like chicago except kyoppo is not there) then SF and maybe Seattle. i’m gonna start in the summer if everything goes as planned.

If I were you I would reconsider about living in milwaukee. I lived there for 5 years. it is one of the most segregated cities and their crime rate is rising. I lived in a village called shorewood. very nice neighborhood but it is surround by ghetto hoods on every corner of the village. I even had my car stolen right out of the f-ing driveway, and to make matters worse my crib was in one of the upscale hoods in shorewood. aside from the race problems and insistent crime problems, I really loved milwaukee for what it’s worth. downtown is really beautiful at night, spending time at the lakefront was a swell experience, the weather was the f-ing best...only if the crime problem was taken care of I think I would have stayed there.

Freelance is nice if you can deal with instability. It gives you freedom to take off for few weeks if you want and allow you to try different things. Personally, I get restless if I’m at one place too long doing the same thing.

I’m not exactly sure if I belong in this thread, but “freelancing” owns.  I just have a problem spending my entire day playing video games instead of working.

Not really freelance vs Stable job related but here’s an interesting link about how much people make.
